How to Choose the Right Litter Box

How to Choose the Right Litter Box

1. Pick the Right Size
Cats need enough space to turn around comfortably. A general rule is to choose a litter box that is at least one and a half times the length of your cat. Larger cats or multi-cat households often benefit from oversized boxes. Small boxes may cause litter scatter and discourage your cat from using it.

2. Covered or Uncovered?
Covered boxes help with privacy and odor control, but some cats feel trapped in them. Uncovered boxes offer better ventilation and are easier to clean. If your cat is new, anxious, or easily startled, an open-top litter box is often the safest choice.

3. Consider the Box Height
High-sided boxes reduce litter tracking and work well for cats who dig vigorously. Lower-sided boxes are better for kittens, senior cats, or cats with mobility issues. Matching the box height to your cat’s needs improves comfort and reduces mess.

4. Easy to Clean
Daily scooping is easier when the litter box has smooth surfaces, rounded corners, and a simple interior shape. Non-stick coatings and top-entry designs can help reduce litter scatter, but only if your cat is comfortable using them.

5. Location Matters
Place the litter box in a quiet, low-traffic area. Avoid noisy spots such as laundry rooms or next to appliances. Cats prefer safe, predictable spaces where they can use the litter box undisturbed.

6. How Many Boxes Do You Need?
The common guideline is one box per cat, plus one extra. This helps reduce territorial stress and ensures every cat has access, especially in multi-pet homes.
